Same-sex marriage: Minutes after midnight, 'dream team' Craig and Luke get married

Glasgow Commonwealth Games sprinter Craig Burns and his partner of three years, fellow athlete Luke Sullivan, have tied the knot just minutes into January 9, the first day same-sex couples can legally marry without a waiver in Australia.
The couple wed shortly after midnight in an intimate country ceremony attended by 50 of their closest family and friends at Summergrove Estate at Carool in the New South Wales Northern Rivers Hinterland.
Mr Burns admitted he had not considered marriage until he met Mr Sullivan.
"It's another way to show your love and appreciation of your partner in front of the people in your life," Mr Burns said.
"Not being able to do that it kind of sucks a bit — you want to be able to show your partner you love them."
Mr Sullivan has been bombarded with messages of support on social media.
"My Instagram direct messages have blown up with people I have never met I don't know who are just sending love and congratulations, it's really touching," he said.
In attendance was Mr Burns's sister, Sarah Ross.
"A few months ago we didn't know if he'd be able to get legally married in Australia, so the fact that today he gets to have a husband is pretty incredible," she said.
"It's something that should have happened a long time ago so for me to see it happen today is pretty important to us."
Celebrant Sarah May Alexander conducted the ceremony inside a newly built barn-inspired function centre on the estate.
"So up until a month ago I had to say some words that were very discriminatory and it broke my heart I used to have to say that marriage was between a man and a woman," she said.
She said the couple have been dream clients, taking just minutes to make important decisions like what suits to wear.
"It's been the opposite of anything bridezilla — they have been a dream team," she said.
The honeymoon is on hold until after the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April with both newlyweds in training for the event

Oprah highlights story of black woman raped by white men

Oprah  Winfrey shared the spotlight with another woman in her speech accepting a lifetime achievement award at the  Golden Globes  on Sunday night. Recy Taylor has not been a well-known figure, but Winfrey's touching on her story and a new documentary are bringing attention to an incident of racial injustice and sexual violence in the Jim Crow South. Taylor, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 97, was the victim of a violent rape as a young woman. In 1944, Taylor was 24 years old and walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted and raped by six white men. Some accounts say seven white men were involved. She was left on the side of the road by her attackers.
