Oprah Winfrey for president in 2020 is a distraction the Democrats don't need

With what Democrats have been through since the 2016 American presidential election, you can't blame them for wanting to find someone who can defeat Donald Trump.
That someone, surprisingly, might be talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
Her electrifying speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night ignited plenty of wishful thinking about an Oprah candidacy.
It grew more than wishful after the awards, when Winfrey's partner, Stedman Graham, told the Los Angeles Times that Winfrey would be willing to run if "the people" wanted her to do so.
But as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.
Winfrey might indeed be able to beat Mr Trump in 2020. She certainly will bring the same kind of buzz to the Democratic primary season that Trump brought to the Republican contest.

Oprah highlights story of black woman raped by white men

Oprah  Winfrey shared the spotlight with another woman in her speech accepting a lifetime achievement award at the  Golden Globes  on Sunday night. Recy Taylor has not been a well-known figure, but Winfrey's touching on her story and a new documentary are bringing attention to an incident of racial injustice and sexual violence in the Jim Crow South. Taylor, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 97, was the victim of a violent rape as a young woman. In 1944, Taylor was 24 years old and walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted and raped by six white men. Some accounts say seven white men were involved. She was left on the side of the road by her attackers.
