'Lost within a moment's time': 20 dead in mudslide include a dad, son, father-in-law

A candlelight vigil for all of the victims drew thousands Sunday night in Montecito.
"Tonight, we need to mourn," Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams said. "It is breathtakingly horrible. Our community is going through something it has never gone through."
The mudslides occurred during a rainstorm Jan. 9 when flash-flood conditions overwhelmed soil on hills that had been charred by weeks of wildfires.
Among the 20 victims are also Sutthithepa's 6-year-old son, Peerawat, and his 79-year-old father-in-law, Richard Loring Taylor, according to a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s summary report.
His 2-year-old daughter, Lydia, meanwhile remains among four people still missing, an update from the county confirmed.

Oprah highlights story of black woman raped by white men

Oprah  Winfrey shared the spotlight with another woman in her speech accepting a lifetime achievement award at the  Golden Globes  on Sunday night. Recy Taylor has not been a well-known figure, but Winfrey's touching on her story and a new documentary are bringing attention to an incident of racial injustice and sexual violence in the Jim Crow South. Taylor, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 97, was the victim of a violent rape as a young woman. In 1944, Taylor was 24 years old and walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted and raped by six white men. Some accounts say seven white men were involved. She was left on the side of the road by her attackers.
